GREUZE Jean - Baptiste (Attributed to) -Tournus 1725 - Paris 1805 Madeleine repentante also known as Le Repentir de Sainte Marie l'Egyptienne dans le désert (The Repentance of Saint Mary the Egyptian in the Desert) Sanguine, black stone and estompe. Glued to sheet. Antique mounting: black fillets and gilded on blue paper background. Mounted on white cardboard (minor foxing and spotting). H. 48.5 - L. 37.5 cm Provenance: Former Richers collection. Related to the composition painted by J B Greuze (circa 1805) in the Norfolk considered by Edgar Munhall to be "Greuze's last known figure painting". by Greuze" (Cf. Catalogue of the Jean - Baptiste Greuze exhibition, n° 113, pp. 234 - 236 - Dijon, 1977). The critic points out that "a number of drawings relating to this Marie l'Egyptienne are known". including "a drawing in red chalk, black stone and estompe" that appeared in the Van Sitter sales Sitter, Paris, May 3 - 5, 1838, and Burat, Paris, April 28 - 29, 1885, no. 80 (Cf. idem p.236). 2 500 / 3 500 €
